Alocasia 'Dawn' | May Overtake House
$35.00
Dawn is such a dainty name, isn’t it? The leaves of this thing look like an artist’s palette of greens. It’s absolutely stunning, thin’ish leaves swaying in the breeze from the fans as it sits near me, looking all pretty and variegated.
I hear it’s going to attempt to take over my house. So, that’s a little disconcerting. The ones here are still pups, so you have some time. I’ve found this to be a pretty good grower, but not an “I’ll take over your house by next Tuesday” sort of grower.
They do guttate, as do most Alocasias, and these have thick enough leaves that if you don’t pay attention, you’ll end up with some edema. I haven’t noticed it to be really horrible, but I figured I should throw out that it does happen.
Like ANY variegated plant, they need light. Good light. Closer to bright light than bright indirect light. Either, I get GREAT morning sun and it sits by a window light or I went ahead and bought a SANSI (or other good brand of your choice) grow light.
Other than that, I guess we just wait for them to need a vaulted ceiling and in the meantime enjoy the view.
This plant is currently living in a 3.5" clear liner to accommodate its luscious root system. It’s potted in my signature 'Not Dirt' substrate—I won't sell the mix to you because it’s a hot mess to make, but the plants clearly love the drama of it.
I’ve vetted these beauties to ensure they’re healthy and happy, but I can’t guarantee what they’ll do once they leave my greenhouse. If I could control nature, I’d be a wizard, and I’d probably have a much cooler hat. 🧙♂️
