Alocasia Silver Dragon | Not Super Needy

Let me tell you something about this plant that I particularly enjoy. I have, on occasion, forgotten it was here.

Now before you go judging me, remember this: I have a LOT of plants. This one is pretty, but it’s also not sitting directly on my desk. Furthermore, I think it’s a recommendation that I have forgotten it from time to time.

Here’s why: a plant I can forget here and there is a plant that does not require constant supervision to thrive. It gets watered regularly’ish - top 2” of soil are dry or I actually notice it sitting there - and otherwise it just kind of hangs out. 

It grows too - but not crazy fast. So if you have a plant stand with only so much vertical space, the Silver Dragon could hang out there with you for a bit, chillin’ like a villain.

And the silver is nice. It’s not “Nelly’s grill” silver, but it’s for sure not green. The pups take a bit to get their color, so you get the distinct pleasure of watching the process happen. Science is so cool (as long as you’re not taking a test on it).

The leaves are firm, have a good (not creepy-feeling) texture, and they’re resilient. Try one, even if you’re a beginner. It might make you want to advance your Alocasia journey and buy a humidifier for your next round of not-so-easygoing Alocasias.

This plant is currently living in a 3.5" clear liner to accommodate its luscious root system. It’s potted in my signature 'Not Dirt' substrate—I won't sell the mix to you because it’s a hot mess to make, but the plants clearly love the drama of it.

I’ve vetted these beauties to ensure they’re healthy and happy, but I can’t guarantee what they’ll do once they leave my greenhouse. If I could control nature, I’d be a wizard, and I’d probably have a much cooler hat. 🧙‍♂️
