Sat in a corner of my living room with zero grow light before I figured out how to work house plants and did not die.

I cannot think of a better recommendation for this plant than that. Typically, darker plants require more light - and if we’re all being honest, this is no exception. If you want it to really grow, you’ve gotta give it the light.

BUT. If you don’t, it probably won’t die.

The dark tone is nice, and when new leaves are coming out, the sheath is a really pretty burgundy, hence the name.

Sometimes, I see people getting all antsy about the white spots on them. They’re called lithocysts, which is a super fancy word for a mineral deposit. They’re not detrimental to the plant, and honestly, unless you’re standing super close and staring, you don’t really even notice them.

So yeah. Easy care. ✔️ Pretty. ✔️ Still is tropical and makes you look like a great plant parent even if you’re sometimes not. ✔️

This plant is currently living in a 3.5" clear liner to accommodate its luscious root system. It’s potted in my signature 'Not Dirt' substrate—I won't sell the mix to you because it’s a hot mess to make, but the plants clearly love the drama of it.

I’ve vetted these beauties to ensure they’re healthy and happy, but I can’t guarantee what they’ll do once they leave my greenhouse. If I could control nature, I’d be a wizard, and I’d probably have a much cooler hat. 🧙‍♂️
