Update: Harry’s owner shared that he actually had a 'brother' plant named Barry who was donated to a local elementary school. It’s a wonderful reminder that while some plant stories end, others continue to grow in our community.

Opening a plant shop is about more than just finding the perfect specimen. It’s about the stories we build with them. Recently, I was asked to look at a local favorite: Harry.

Harry was a Ficus who had been with his family for three decades. Unfortunately, a 40° Georgia night was too much for him, even under a cover. When the leaves stay brown and crispy after a few weeks, it’s usually a sign the internal plumbing has failed. We performed a "Scratch Test," but the stems were dry. Harry’s journey had come to an end.

To help you avoid this heartbreak, here is my Wintering Your Tropicals Guide:

  • The 50-Degree Hard Line: If it’s under 50°F, bring them in. Sheets aren't enough for tropicals like Thai Constellations when the ground temp drops.

  • The "Huddle" Method: Group plants together to create a natural, humid microclimate.

  • The "Chip-and-Dip" Hack: Use a tray of river rocks and water to combat dry heater air without causing root rot.

  • Watch the Glass: Keep leaves 6-12 inches away from cold window panes at night.

At Curated Cuttings, we believe every plant is a unique story waiting to happen. I hand-select our inventory to give you the best possible start. Because I care about their safety, all pickups are scheduled individually to ensure a warm transition from my greenhouse to your home.
