The Bag You Can't Have (Probably)
Season 4, Episode 11. Sex and the City. "It's not a bag, it's a Birkin." And even name-dropping Lucy Liu, Samantha can't get one. This waitlist is longer than my perimenopausal chin hairs, the price tag has five figures before you even consider tax, and they're genuinely not going to pick you — even if you could drop that kind of change.
Really though. Is it even that cute? Nah.
The Bag You Almost Bought (Possibly)
Coach. A well-loved staple of every professional woman who ever had somewhere to be. Relatively affordable, genuinely cute, and built to last — which I know firsthand because I have two. A crossbody I bought vintage and have only beat up further, and an attaché case from the days when I had regular pedicures and a job that required airport shoes.
Both are leather. Both are scuffed. Both are still in rotation.
The Birkin You Can Afford (Actually)
Then there's this queen of the plant world. Regal, slow-growing, and bit as flashy as her namesake — those stripes aren't just color, they're texture. Running your hand across a Birkin leaf feels like dragging your knuckles down the wood-paneled walls of your grandmother's house. You almost expect to hear something.
She's stunning in a way that makes people stop mid-sentence. Compact enough to stand out on a shelf without taking it over, topping out around three feet at full height. Moderate water, minimal fuss — you water, you walk away, you enjoy the view.
The fine print: reversion is real, meaning she could go full green on you with no warning and no fix. She's toxic to pets, which I mention without analogy because some jokes aren't worth it. And she's prone to fungal issues, which is exactly why you water and walk away — she needs airflow, not attention.
A Quick Note on Variegation Reversion
Reversion in Birkins is basically a plant identity crisis — the variegation (those white stripes) isn't stable the way solid green is. It's the result of cells that lack chlorophyll, and chlorophyll is what a plant uses to make energy. So genetically, the plant is always "under pressure" (tell me you sang it too) to just... go back to being efficient. Full green wins the survival argument every time.
Nobody can tell you exactly when or why it happens to a specific plant. Light levels are a factor — not enough light and the plant stops bothering with the expensive party trick. Stress is a factor. Sometimes it just decides. There's no fix once it reverts. You can't reverse it. You just have a very pretty green plant now.
She's not low-maintenance because she's easy. She's low-maintenance because she knows what she is.
